DescriptionIf Goya was alive and working today, he would probably be categorized (in part) as a political cartoonist or perhaps a caricaturist. He would probably sell as many copies of his Los Caprichos as he did in his lifetime. In other words, not many - though in those days, possibly out of fear of being hauled in by the Inquisition. This plate is likely from the first printing of about 300 copies with provenance going back to the early 19th century. The original copper plates reside in the Calcografía Nacional. Together with "Mala Noche" (Plate 36) it is among the most alluring depictions of prostitutes/sex workers Goya made in this series. _____ FRANCISCO DE GOYA Y LUCIENTES (1746-1828) It is nicely stretched (Bien tirada està) Plate 17 from: Los Caprichos. Etching with burnished aquatint, drypoint and engraving, on laid paper, a very good impression from the First Edition, published by the artist, Madrid, 1799, the highlights still bright, the background dark and even with little sign of wear, framed. Plate: 81⁄2 x 6 in. (216 x 152 mm.) Sheet: 113⁄4 x 8 in. (298 x 203 mm.) Provenance. Presumably Manuel Fernández Durán y Pando, Marqués de Perales del Río (1818-1886), Madrid. Don Pedro Fernández-Durán (1846-1930), Madrid; with his stamp (Lugt 747b); presumably by descent from the above. ‘There is a drawing-study for this print in Goya's Sanlúcar-A Album. In the print, Goya adds in the background the procuress whose wrinkled face and beady eyes look over every detail of the young lady's preparations. As is often the case, the Ayala [commentary] is even more explicit (than the Prado): ‘There could be nothing worse than a prostitute. Aunt Curra knows very well the profit that can be obtained through well-stretched stockings.’ 1 ‘The most erotic plate of the series, the title has a punning meaning. It alludes to the fact that the woman, as a prostitute, has engaged in sexual activity to the degree that her vagina has been 'well stretched' Social/Sharing |

Well, I certainly wasn't expecting the Spanish Inquisition! Your collection always amazes me.

Amazing! Thanks for all the commentary on these historic etchings. I hadn't heard the tawdry double entendre of the title explained before.
