DescriptionIn 1982, Captain Marvel died. Not the Captain Marvel who says the magical word “Shazam.” And not the Captain Marvel played by Brie Larson in the movies. This was Marvel Comics’ Captain Mar-Vell (a.k.a. Marvel), the space warrior from the planet Kree. Jim Starlin wrote and illustrated the story “The Death of Captain Marvel” for Marvel’s first graphic novel. In 1982, I was ten years old and this was one of the first comics I actually “read”; not just looked at the pictures. Starlin brilliantly tells the story of the last days of this hero. But unlike other superhero fare of the day, Captain Marvel didn’t die a warrior in a blaze of combat saving the universe. Instead, he died of cancer lying in his bed, surrounded by fellow superheroes and family. Thus, this apparent “super” being was not strong enough to fight a crippling disease, which in turn reminded the other heroes in the story, and the reader, of their own mortality. To say that this story would have a profound impact on how I viewed comic stories and art would be an understatement. It became the bar that I would measure other works of fiction by for years to come. In addition, I began to go back and read every Captain Marvel comic I could get my hands on. Of course, the best issues of the run were written and illustrated by Jim Starlin. Starlin created universe spanning space operas which took my 10 year-old imagination to places I had never dreamed. In addition, Jim Starlin created one of comic’s greatest villains and Captain Marvel antagonist, Thanos, who has been seen recently in the “Avengers” series of movies. During his tenure on the title, he also created the character Drax, who can be seen in all of the “Guardians of the Galaxy” movies. So, I did this illustration, 30 years after the first time I drew Captain Marvel and 38 years after reading that first story, with Jim Starlin in mind. But that is not the end of the story. This is actually part 1 of a larger piece, so stay tuned!Captain Marvel Villains: Basilisk Chaos Deity Cheetah Controller Cyberex Devros Brood warrior Deathgrip Skrull warrior Super Skrull Korvac Living Laser Lord Gaea Man-Slayer Megaton Mercurio Metazoid Nitro Ooru Qu’lar Ronan Supreme Intelligence Supremor Sentry Supreme Sentry Solam IASSAC Ramrod Terrex Stellerax Super Adaptoid Yon Rogg Kree Warrior Quasimodo Doctor Minerva Doctor Mynde Screamers Soul Masters Thanos (center) Mistress Death (center) Social/Sharing |
