Walt Kelly - Pogo Sunday - Easter & Kathryn Barbara - 05.04.1953

Stunning and important 1953 Easter Sunday featuring Pogo and the Easter Bunny.
This wonderful example has been featured (page 193) in Andrae/Laqua’s great book “Walt Kelly: The Life and Art of the Creator of Pogo”. In the book Pogo scholar Mark Burstein reflects a little more on this 1953 Sunday:
“You will note in this exhibit the Easter Sunday of 1953, perhaps his [Walt Kelly’s] most affecting work, in which the name on the side of the boat is that of his infant daughter, Kathryn Barbara, who had just died the previous December, 1952, having survived but a single month. Her name would be memorialized on the boats of Easter Sundays for some years to come, and in the bittersweet annual appearance (on October 31st) of a bug paddling on a birthday cake.”
