Description

Milton Caniff always credited Hollywood actress Joan Crawford as the visual inspiration for his most famous creation, the Dragon Lady from Terry and the Pirates. Here is an original piece of artwork Caniff painted and presented to Crawford in 1964 as a birthday present.

I think there were a lot of Caniff fans after this piece. I got lucky, though it would've been nice to get it a little cheaper. ;) When it arrived, I was somewhat stunned by the condition and quality of the piece. I own several pieces of original artwork by Caniff and this is one of the finest.

The fact that Caniff met with Crawford, had her hold this very drawing, took a photo of the occasion and that the photo has stayed with the original art all these years is what really makes this a special piece in my eyes. Without the photo, it would still be a cool piece, but just another original Caniff specialty piece. Having the photo puts it over the top!
