Description
So for anyone that knows me, they know Groo is my favortie comic of all time and in no small part due to the genius that is Sergio Aragones. I started collecting Groo with the Epic Series in the mid 80s - and quickly went back and picked up anything by this artist that I could.

This here is sketch done back in 1981. The first appearance of the character in comics is Destroyer Duck in 1982. So this predates that. I love it because it shows a very very early rendition of Groo. As I haven't posted in some time, I am posting a 2nd Groo drawing by Simon Bisley at the same time. So check it out!

Oh, wow. You hit a homer with your first trip back to the plate in a while. It's Aragones style, but not quite honed it yet, which I dig even more. I'm a huge process and artistic development guy, do these types of pages really speak to me. Awesome find! Congrats

I don't know how or where you found this but you need to go buy a lottery ticket.

This is really quite wonderful, isn't it? Without question, an important and historic piece of Aragonés and Groo art! Although I usually dislike it when artists add the character name and/or logo to a sketch (because really, do we need to be told who the character is?), in this case it's great and adds value in terms of provenance. Now, no fool can ever say "You know, it really looks a lot like Groo, but it's still looks a bit different. I'd call this is a Groo prototype." 😂

Very cool!  Groo actually looks pretty serious in this early appearance!

Fantastic --- what a find!  Love the expression on Groo here, and there is so much implied by this setup, both comical and epic, as only Aragones could conjure up.

Wow, congrats, man! Gotta be HUGE for such a big Groo fan. A great full shot that predates his first appearance - hard to top. And I like how the final look was still in process - everything's there in this image, just not polished yet!

Outstanding... simply superb!  I also discovered Groo thanks to the Epic run in the 80’s - it was one of the few “crossover” titles my brother and I both enjoyed.  Aragones is the master of the crowd shot and “people business” but I really like how detailed / filled in the backgrounds are here.  It makes me think that I see some Stan Sakai influence or flavor in this one.  Really beautiful, historic piece - sincere congrats!

I love seeing historic pieces like this, especially when it is a relatively unknown (or completely unknown) work of art. Thanks for sharing and major congrats!!!

A really awesone Groo drawing from 1981! What is the story behind it? Did you purchase it yourself back in 1981?
