Crazy great quality. Bachalo's heavy use of darkness and shadow adds to the mystical and mysterious world of Doctor Strange.
Having always been partial to the more realistic approach to drawing comics, Bachalo has never been someone whose art appealed to me. But having said that, as more collectors have posted pieces by him over the past couple of years, I've studied them and have grown an appreciation for his abstract stylings. Something about his approach also seems to fit quite perfectly with the magical machinations of the world of Doctor Strange. Lovely piece, Jason!
Gorgeous contrast on this one! Has a Mignola feel to it. Great addition!
He's really thinking about the composition of the page as a whole. The 3 main round forms (top one partial!) with the small horizontal panels sliding across the page are amazing. He echoes the big rounds forms with the little circles. There's a lot to like here! Congrats!
Thanks, Yo - you hit the nail on the head; very well put! I really loved how Chris used a magical "vines" motif as a beautiful framing element throughout the Empirikul battle pages of the run, and this page struck me almost as a precursor to that, with the circles swirling your eye around (and establishing narrative flow) while also "containing" the art within it (and then the dark at the top and light at the bottom make the whole thing into a sort of graphical yin/yang riff). Thank you for your great comments, everyone!
Cool!
Great page. I also loved the series even if the (a bit forced IMHO) "fun" & humorous" tone doesn't necessarily fit the character.
It's even a magical layout. The three small panels and inks break up two big splashy panels that are connected...but aren't. And there's not even any true panel delineation between those two. That is pretty neat. And floating the action panels above that lead to the final scene of the open door is so awesome. I can see why you wanted this page so much, there is a lot of cool stuff going on. Some obvious, some subtle. Great score! Congrats!
Gonna piggyback off of J here. Totally agree. I think Chris is one of the best at having elements in his work that pop and make you go wow, vs. others that are more subtle and lend a lot to the overall storytelling aspect. I don't think this was ever more evident than on Doc Strange. His unique style and liberties he could take with the crazy magical abstract world that is the Doc's just flat out WORKED. Glad you love the page like you do, Jason - congrats!
...and thank you, sir, for not only your great comment, but for allowing me the chance to show this in my gallery! Thanks, K.
You are SO, so exactly spot on. And those four 'trickle down' panels have dark, light, light, and dark panel borders (which I hadn't noticed before), too, emphasizing the circular/mirror-like nature of the layout. Great comment, J H. Many thank yous to your kind self and to all others for your thoughts!
Really loved this story and what Bachalo did with Dr Strange. Nice page!
Wonderful page from Doctor Strange #4 by Chris Bachalo and Tim Townsend. I really enjoyed Chris and Tim's run on Doctor Strange. it was an interesting look at Doctor Strange's life from a whole new perspective. I like the way they showed us the world through Stephen Strange's eyes. This page is an great example where they demonstrate that even his house has magical portals. I loved the art on this run. Between Chris and Tim, they gave everything a new fresh look. I loved all the black they they used, which helped give the scenes a sense of solidity. I recently picked up the cover to #1 and it has the same thick blacks as this page, and the same sense of newness. Anyway, great pick-up, congrats!
