Description

My first piece of art from the 1991 X-Men era. This page covers many points of interest for me. First off, the great art and stylings for one of my favorite artists, Richard Bennett, who has had to create some emotionally packed art for some of the best X-Men storylines. He seems to get a lot of the sad stories, which I guess I tend to really enjoy. This particular one, written by another favorite of mine, Fabian Nicieza, deals with the Legacy virus in the early stages and the character Infectia who ultimately dies from it.

This page features Beast, Iceman and one of my all-time favorites Rogue, at the bedside of a once enemy Infectia when a disguised Sinister walks in to join and discuss the virus. I got this page a while ago and finally posting, this is technically my first Rogue, Iceman, Beast, Infectia and Sinister comic art. What a true beauty in so many ways. When I was collecting and reading this series at the time (very near the start of my comic reading/collecting “career”) I assumed all this X-Men art was Jim Lee stylings, realizing much later in life that he handed off after issue #11 to Art Thibert, then Andy Kubert and Richard Bennett filling the gaps on a few issues. Ultimately realizing that some of my favorite early X-Men 1991 era artwork was not actually Jim Lee but these other X-tremely talented artists. This book along with many of the surrounding issues being one of them regarded so highly. Bennett’s portrayal of Beast and Rogue is gorgeous and prime example of how I envision these characters when thinking of this X-Men era. They are unique and also immediately recognizable for who they are, even without the coloring; for me that talent is pure gold and seeing it so well represented on this page. Bennett is also well known in my industry as a story-board artist, which I believe is where he spends most of his current time and talents. We’ve shared X-perience on a few shows, but I have yet to work directly with him and his work, I am hoping to cross paths at some point in my career so I can gush in person.

Another point of interest for me featured on this page is the direct in your face comparison/mirror of the Legacy virus to mutants and AIDS to homosexuals. The upper left panel is so brutal with it’s controversial thinking, not far from the reality of what people were actually thinking/expressing in the early 90’s regarding homosexuals. I love that as a young adult reading this, I was getting access to something not afraid to have an opinion; something I definitely related so strongly towards. One of the biggest reasons I find the X-Men so intriguing is how they are treated, hated and feared for just existing, being born that way. Representing so many groups of people; whether it’s race, gender, economic class, or in my case sexuality; and finding ways to come together, fight these injustices and become stronger as a result.

These are only some of the X-ceptional reasons for why I am truly proud to have this page part of my collection.
