Description

I still have that pocket-sized Bantam Book graphic novel that I found in a junk shop some years after it had been published. Even then, it was in very good shape, having obviously not been read very much...

By then, I had heard about Blackmark from collectors who knew more than I did and there were a couple articles, and some pages published... Well, just tantalizing enough for my curiosity!

Especially because we're talking about Gil Kane!

And, while the novel itself was quite satisfying (it really begged for many more sequels), the artwork was outstanding! Gil Kane was really at his peak, then. And he did put all of his talent and energy into that crazy project...

Some of these pages pop up sometimes, actually more battered than my printed copy, but who cares? It was high time I picked up one for my collection and this wide-scope arena scene makes me happy! So...

I love how he created depth with the zipatone shading. Creating the shadow from something larger falling on the character, but showing the shadows edge right by him, is a really great artistic choice. It perfectly uses the very limited space. And I so dig this is art from a novel. What a cool find! Big congrats!
