Description

I first wrote to Hank Ketcham back in 1984. I didn't ask him for anything, but told him how highly I regarded Dennis the Menace. It was one of those strips, along with Bud Blake's Tiger, that I felt was very underrated. Hank wrote a very nice letter back to me, thanking me for my kind words. He talked about his working process on the panel, as well as the work that his assistants did. Along with the letter, he generously included a couple of pencil prelims and an unused/unfinished panel that was going to be tossed out. One of the pencil prelims that he sent to me back then is the one you see pictured as an additional image here. Anyway, over the years I maintained an irregular correspondence with Hank. He would often send a short note; sometimes another prelim.

Fast-forward 26 years. Russ Cochran, in his June 2006 auction, had three available Dennis the Menace panels. One of the finished panels, from 6/14/84, matched one of the prelims that Hank sent to me back in 1984! You can imagine how excited I was to see this piece made available. Hank had long donated his finished originals to Boston University, so they are not at all common. To find the one that matched the prelim that he sent me; well, it's just collector's heaven! I feel quite lucky to have stumbled upon this piece.
