DescriptionLike many others, I was captivated by Beta Ray Bill from the moment I first saw him (what an incredible character design!), but it was the layers and depth that Walt Simonson invested into Bill's character that made him (and Walt!) one of my all-time favorites. While Thor's immortality certainly agrees with him, Bill's mortality and sense of duty and responsibility to his community is the cornerstone of his brilliance. Sacrificing his body and self to become his peoples' greatest protector (which resulted in his becoming "horrific" in their eyes, and them distancing themselves from him), Bill's nobility, sense of purpose, devotion, and depth of sacrifice deeply resonated with me in a way that Thor's never did. Far from being a "Thor Clone", Bill was the best of Thor, made better. Imagine Peter Parker being bitten by a radioactive Uru hammer and you have Bill, the pinnacle of a tragic hero. Plus: "Beta Ray Bill"? Yeah - best name in comics. I know that this sketch was probably dashed off by Walt in about 15 seconds, but I'm deeply grateful to be able to display a cool drawing of one of my very favorite characters by his creator. Thank you, Lee, for this great Comic Art LIVE pickup! Social/Sharing |

It's a quickly dashed off gesture drawing, but that's what makes it special. When you know from having seen with your own eyes how quickly something like this goes from blank page to complete, recognizeable head shot, it's magical!

You're not kidding, Ruben. I remember seeing Adam Hughes turn a black piece of paper into a beautiful Thing headsketch in about 30 seconds, and Stan Sakai create a whole vista scene in that time... All the while my mouth was agape - it was astonishing. I hope someone had the chance to feel that sense of wonder when Walt was doing this one! In any respect, I am certainly grateful to enjoy the fruits of his labor here. Thank you, Ruben (and all!) for your comments!

Whenever you can get a fave character done by his creator...hard to top in this OA game IMO. Let alone Beta Ray Bill (yes...best name in comics!) by the great Walt Simonson! May be a "quick" sketch but it's still so clearly Simonson and clearly resonates with you, Jason. Congrats on the pick up, bud!

Simonson OA of Beta Ray Bill to me is sacred, period. Everything you wrote resonates personally -- his 1st app. was my first vintage comic purchase as a 10 year old, a then-crazy sum of $15 or so to a kid used to spending a buck or two per book. But noble Bill was well worth it. In his transformed state, he can't even crack a smile... heavy is the head that wears the crown, or in this case the hands that wield Stormbreaker. Small wonder him and Silver Surfer get along so well. Gratz !!

Beta Ray Bill is the best. He was a fantastic design and concept, straight from the Thing Playbook: The heroic "monster" with a heart of gold. Walt created him honor-forward, and Beta Ray Bill developed into one of my, and everyone else's, favorite characters in comics. Very cool score. Congrats!

Thanks, J H, for your great comment. I am a total sucker for the 'heart of a hero' monster hero (Ben Grimm is another of my favorites) and Bill "humanized" the Thor universe for me (and many others, obviously). With the creation of Bill, Mr. Simonson gave me an "in" to the inner workings of Asgard, a place I loved and had often visited, but had never been able to call home before. And then there was Bill, to hold the door open for me. Thanks again, J H (and everyone!) for your comments!
