Description

The summer of 1989 saw the release of the blockbuster movie Batman (Warner Bros.), starring Michael Keaton as Batman, Jack Nicholson as the Joker, Kim Basinger as Vicki Vale and directed by Tim Burton. The film grossed over $400 million worldwide at the box office, propelled by an unprecedented surge of “BATMANIA” so intensely potent, that I've never experienced anything close to it, before or since.

In conjunction with the movie release, Galerie Michael, located on the famed Rodeo Drive in the heart of Beverly Hills, put on a one man gallery showing for Bob Kane, the creator of Batman entitled, BATMAN AN AMERICAN ICON FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY, 1989. This wonderful poster was one of two (the first was Batman "Vigil Over Gotham City)) that was produced to promote the show. This stunning painting featured a vintage Joker close-up by Kane in the artist's celebrated and very early, dark mysterioso mood as the maniacal maniac was originally created back in the Golden-Age for Batman #1 (Spring, 1940).
