Description

At the time of this writing, this cover is the crown jewel of my X-Man related pages and covers! Being the massive fan of Nate Grey a.k.a. X-Man that I am, acquiring this cover was definitely a high moment in my collecting career! Roger Cruz, who I feel captures the essence of X-Man better than most artists of the age who drew him (except for Ian Churchill, who also did a tremendous job in the few moments he drew him), does a fantastic job with this piece! Wizard Magazine was blessed with some great cover art, case in point! Had X-Man been more famous and not disappeared into obscurity, I personally think this could have (and should have) become later known as an iconic cover! Maybe it will be years from now! Part of me wishes it could have been used as a comic cover, if for no other reason than to get (possibly) more exposure amongst comic readers. Anyway, I've rambled on long enough, suffice to say I love staring endlessly at this beauty!

Pretty classic one because it was such a 90's character pulled from Age of Apocalypse during Wizard's wall to wall coverage of it.  Wizard had articles on it affected the X-Titles, how all their creators shot up in the top 10 writers and artists list, how each was in the top ten books, how the prices were going up for those issues, etc.  You couldn't get enough of it as an X-Men fan.

That's awesome! I knew none of that, since at the time, I wasn't reading Wizard, any X-Men titles, and was pretty much focused only on early Spider-Man stuff. I had no knowledge of what was going on in the industry at the time, so this is me catching up on all that history I missed!

Wizard was the hype machine back then.  As with all hype, not much substance, but people buy into it and invest a lot into it to keep it going.

Congrats on snagging this one for yourself. There's no feeling quite like the ones you get when you acquire something you love so much yet didn't need to pay a relative fortune for! Man, it's too bad you were completely oblivious to Wizard back then. It's not really worth the money, but if you ever met someone locally who had a large Wizard collection, it's worth borrowing and going through each issue just to get a sense of what the comics market was like back in those days. The amount of hype generated by that magazine was unbelievable!

Man, you don't get much more 90s than X-Man on a Wizard cover. I so dug this character, too, and was surprised to see him fall off. I liked the stories. Isn't it great finding that piece you love? It's a really cool cover. Congrats!

That's nice Simon!  I know how much you enjoy the character, so this is an especially great piece!

Outstanding piece, man - a quintessential Nate Grey image.  Right up your alley!  Love the expression (looking right at the reader!), and the pose.  Some fine inks, too.  Also, I think it's cool that it's a Wizard cover!  Nostalgia inducing for many of us, and as Marcus points out, Nate being hear I think drummed up his profile at the time!  Congrats!

Big fan of Roger's work.  I always thought that his style could fit on any of the X-titles.
