PRELUDE TO ARMOR HUNTERS – PART 1! The countdown to the Valiant Universe event of 2014 starts now!

For eons, one threat above all others has brought pain and strife down upon civilizations across the universe – the X-O Manowar armor. And now the Manowar has come to Earth. What will follow in its wake? The road to ARMOR HUNTERS begins here as Valiant superstars Robert Venditti and Diego Bernard unleash the opening salvo of the cataclysm that is come…

Poor Aric. The dude finds the most powerful weapon in the known universe and everyone can't just leave him alone. First the Vine, the Unity and now some weird, alien dudes are heading to Earth looking for the armor. X-O Manowar has long been a comic series about consequences, and Aric is not clearly not done paying his dues. It's a big universe with plenty of bad guys who seem to want that fancy suit of Aric's.

Robert Venditti knows how to structure a great setup. This issue reads like the opening to blockbuster movie, jumping from space to Earth then back to space again. We get spaceships crashing, space stations in crisis and epic fight scenes. There are several great moments in this issue that'll grab you and make you excited to read what comes next. The scene involving Aric attempting to save some astronauts is exciting and brutal. The fact that this is only the prelude to the Armor Hunters storyline is very good news. If things start off this awesome, they can only get better.

Diego Bernard joins the Valiant Universe in this issue and his stuff is pretty impressive. The smaller moments look okay, but once X-O is in space things look freaking superb. The double-page spread that features X-O flying away from the Earth is breath taking. The action looks awesome, which is awesome sign of things to come.

Writer Robert Venditti continues to deliver some dynamite storytelling in this issue of X-O MANOWAR. The whole issues leave a TON of questions in the reader's mind. Everything is changed since it's pretty obvious that if there's two X-O Manowar armors, then there has to be more. This gives "Armor Hunters" a new meaning. As far as where this story is going, it's fantastic and very exciting. Aric has a ton of stuff to deal with. Not only does he have to lead the Visigoths, work for the American government, and show other countries out in space who is in charge, but now he has a new threat.

The pacing to this issue is fantastic and feels incredibly natural. Readers will feel right there with Aric as he heads into space. There's a natural progression to the story and the suspense heightens into the second half, which leads to some dynamite action. This is really the first time where the reader is a bit unsure if Aric can handle what he's up against, and it's simply amazing. Plus, the readers are treated to some pretty brutal action sequences, and that's always a plus because it's never over-done.

The art is pretty fantastic here. Diego Bernard does the pencils, Alejandro Sicat is on inks, and Brian Reber is on colors. It's consistent and wonderful. It does seem like the inking gets heavy, at times, but Sicat is really just matching the light source of the sun on these characters, and sometimes, things just look really dark, which is what the scene would look like if it was in space.

The vast darkness and cold nature of the universe will render you small and helpless no matter who you are.  Bernard is able to capture that desperation quality throughout.
