DescriptionGen13 pages are very very hard to crowbar out of people's collections. When this came up, I grabbed it. This was one of my favorite early Image series - the cheekiness, JSC doing interiors, the characters, etc. I re-read this issue before writing this and in today's politically correct world, this comic would never be made. The writing on Gen13 was solid -they introduced the chars as kind of two dimensional, then went deeper into their stories. Early on, Grunge was portrayed as a doofus. In this issue they expanded on his backstory a bit. Here Grunge is at a skatepark and does an invert (color version in alt images). Some of the highlights from this image-> o The lens-flare from the sun gives it a cinematic feel o While the action is 'paused', you can tell from grunge's hair that there is kinetic energy o I feel like I'm at Venice beach here o Texture of the board Social/Sharing |

Wicked Splash. Loved JSCs interiors so much. And agreed about it being made now. As such would be the case for damn near everything put out in the nineties and early 2000s...would never see the light of day! Glad I was around for comics then.

Campbell was just drawing what he was given by the script and in life in SoCal. This is the 90's as seen by an artist who was immersed in that era instead of someone of a different generation interpreting or trying to place judgement on it. He is able to genuinely reflect the youthful energy onto paper. It may look or read really dated with how hamfisted the 90's references are and how exploitative it was for female characters, but it was a reflection of what the audience wanted in a world that loved Baywatch, MTV, Pulp Fiction, etc... if they could get away with things, a small upstart indie comic should too. This Grunge splash is promoting his lifestyle as well as his identity. A person of color adopting the lifestyle to be seen as the personification of it rather than let their color dictate who they are was cutting edge for comics.

I've always loved this splash. And Alex Garner inked the heck out of it.

Your description of "cinematic feel" captures this page perfectly. With the backlit sun. Oh, so much goodness!

Epic Gen 13 page. So cool looking back to see how Campbell's art has grown and changed since then.
