DescriptionIn over 40 years I have never gone out of my way to reacquire a piece of my own art once it was sold, but when this became available recently I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity. I haven’t seen the original anywhere since I first sold it way back when.I was 20 or 21 and really early into my career when I painted this. It was my fifth SSOC cover, and the first painting overall where I actually felt I was starting to know what I was doing. I’ve always considered it to be a plateau jumper for me and it’s remained my favorite of all the SSOC covers I did. I’m sure the subject matter has a lot to do with my affinity for it, as well! 🙂 While there are a couple of things I would fix or do differently today as I have four decades more experience as a painter, I am thrilled to have it in my possession once again (especially as I was able to use my own art as collateral). I had forgotten how no scan or photo I’d ever seen of it has ever captured the actual art (including those here), particularly the subtle variety of reds on the huge lion head. It really is hard to believe this is 40 years old as I remember painting it like it was yesterday. Social/Sharing |

Just crazy to think you had skills like that at such a young age! Congrats on bringing it back home!

Truly is a magnificent painting, Mr. Jusko. I was the second highest bidder, but so glad it was you that was the highest bidder. If one day you should ever decided to part with it please let me know.

Ah, sorry! If I didn't get it now I assumed I'd never see it again. I thought I'd have buyer's remorse after I received it, but I couldn't be happier.

I just wonder what couple things you would fix, Joe, as this painting seems simply perfect to me. And if you're thinking about Conan's hair and face, I really like them as they are and I'll bet JML would agree :) Seriously, an amazing artwork that happily came back where it belongs, huge congrats!

Love this cover! Savage Sword 68 and 69 were the two mags that started me down the Sword and Sorcery path and comic collecting. Your covers are seared into my brain and a formative influence. Thanks for the memories and the excellent art!

I expect you were posing as Conan but who was posing as the tiger?

Wow! That must have felt odd, having to buy back your own art! But I can sure see why you would--It's awesome! Love the large image of the Lion's head, and the scene of Conan trying to choke the tiger is amazing! Congrats!

The ebb and flow of the hobby is watched over and tended by the unseen hand or tiger's paw which could turn in your favor when prompted to pounce.

Beautiful cover - back in the day when I picked this one up from the newsstand I thought the lions head was a photo with the artwork overlayed. The Jusko run on SSOC still stands out as one of the best ever on a comic book series. Hell it's why I bought SSOC along with the killer B&W pinups. Congrats on bringing this one home.
