Ex: Hammer Galleries
An original charming illustration by Bemelmans from one of his early books titled “Rosebud” (please see the few images we have included of the book in which the art appears as a full published page). Ink and watercolor on paper, with the art literally covering the entire sheet. Signed “Bemelmans” in lower right. Presented matted framed and glazed in the original Hammer Gallery frame, 26.5″ x 20.5″ with the original Hammer label on the verso. (We only changed the backing on the frame to remove the acidic paper). The drawing of the “Elephant” fills the entire sheet, and is from page 28 of the book. The story describes the scene as “SNAP- the rope parted! The Elephant lay on his back in the grass.” The story of “Rosebud” is based on an African folk tale about a smart rabbit (who is named Rosebud), beating brawny animals. The story is humorous, describing a rabbit who tries to prove that he is not just a meek, weak and frightened creature but instead has great intellect allowing him to be as impressive and important as the largest beasts in the animal kingdom. The story is intended to be a great message about being able to combat stereo-types. Very slight pale stain to the lower edge. Overall in wonderful vibrant condition.
*Note- The art on this sheet literally covers the entire paper and as such and is one of the largest pieces by Bemelmans we have offered. This impressive piece has a large outstanding presence in the classic fun Bemelmans’s style, and will be accompanied by the scarce first printing of the Original Rosebud book. An absolutely fun piece!
