DescriptionHula Hoops were a signature craze of the late 1950s. 100 million were sold in two years, at a time when the U.S. population was only 179 million. The fad had died, and returned, and died again by 1972 when this story was published. But since Superboy stories seemed set in the late 1950s, a Hula story makes sense. Note also the reference to the Bunny Hop, an early 1950s dance fad. I wonder whether the reference to "Don Blake" was accidental. This was already established as the alter ego of Thor in Marvel comics. The blind teen recalls Matt Murdock. Measles was a leading cause of childhood blindness until a vaccine emerged in the 1960s.
