Description

It happened at LuccaComics in 2019, when a visit to the Jeff Jones exhibit gave me a case of Stendhal Syndrome. All that magnificent art, all together, it was too much and I started crying. Hard. It took me quite a while to gather myself (with my the 8 y.o. son looking at me alarmed) and, still, I could feel it coming back, hard to keep at bay.

By the time I left the exhibit for the third (and last) time, I was resoluted that I had to add a proper Jones to my collection, so I did what every collector does: started selecting pages and shipped'em out to HA.

It took me a while, and the intervention of my outstanding buddy Steve M. made it so that I could realize my dream, and now it's finally here: plate 4 from the 1980 Black Lotus "As a Child" portfolio.
Watercolors and gouache on thin board, 16.5 by 18.5 inches.
Life is good.

A SMALL ADDITION
After I posted this on a Facebook group about JCJ, Carol Zaloom, a former model for him/her, replied with this interesting insight, for which I'm very thankful.
"I had the pleasure of watching these pieces come to life. They are not watercolor though they do look like it. Jeff had a technique involving gesso, pencil, and very thinned oils that he used on several works. This collection and The Wall are great examples.
The muse for this was a mix of us...like so many of Jeff's. The pose might be Diane or Sandi. But I was around and sat for certain elements. I do think the face and hair are more mine."

This is incredible, Enrico.

I was there, having with all our friends one of our last (so far!) dinners in Lucca, when, everybody overwhelmed by that grand exhibition of Jones’s masterpieces, you shouted out loud: “I must grab one of these! It is time to thin out the branches of the tree!”

Well, you did it and for a piece that could easily be presented among all those other outstanding works in Palazzo Ducale.

Very well done, my Friend!

Absolutely wonderful. Jones is simply one of the greatest and this is a phenomenal example of her work.
