DescriptionWinsor McCay is a master of cartoonsmanship and one of the all-time great conceptual and technical illustrators that I've ever stumbled across. John Lucas is also a conceptual master of cartoon characters and surreal imagery. Thus, I threw down the gauntlet, and asked Mr. Lucas to tackle a mashup of McCay's Little Nemo in Slumberland cartoon strip with my favorite funnybook character, Daredevil. The result speaks for itself. All of the little flourishes, from the postures, characterizations, inking, and header (I mean, freaking Stiltman, Frogman, Bullseye, and Gladiator!) to the layout, with its stark lines and impeccable masonry, all scream Master McCay. Foggy, Battling Jack, and gLittle Matthewh look like they were lifted straight from an early 1900s issue of the NY Herald, so much so that you can almost imagine a newspaper fold right down the middle of this page. I also love how john used the looming visage of the Kingpin to such ominous and McCay-like effect, conjuring up images of Flip and the personified moon from the original strips. I knew John would nail this in concept, but I had no idea he would be able to harness the truly unique McCay stylistic aesthetic. This is easily a high water mark in my collection and feels like it should be the first in a series. Thanks, John! You never fail to surprise and delight. Social/Sharing |

Only the most tragic characters with the most heavy of backstories could have given this so much weight of emotion.

He dulls the pain by using his legal touch on many ladies.
