I could see this like a curtain opening up to reveal the title. What is striking is the eyes and the smile are kept for the final painting are just as pronounced here if not more so.

Sandy Kossin produced what I personally feel is the best looking version of The Shadow ever created. I know, life long Shadow fans hate it because it wasn't keeping on model with how he'd been drawn and painted for decades. It's tough to see your favourite character looking different when nostalgia blinds you and keeps your tastes so narrowly focused, I get it. But from a creative standpoint, Kossin's Shadow was the first to actually play upon the character's supposed "avenger in the night who scares criminals" reputation. I enjoy the classic Shadow look just fine, if only for nostalgic reasons. But from a purely artistic point of view, Kossin was the first illustrator to bring something different to the character, visually speaking, by making him appear truly terrifying with that ghoulish grin. It gave us an idea of what this character would look like if he actually existed in real life. This is a Shadow that would truly terrify criminals if they stepped to him in a dark alley and saw those twin barrels and his ghoulish grin staring back at them! Congrats on owning this prelim to what is my favourite of Kossin's covers!
