We are that point in culture that this kind of madness could actually take place with apps that hold no social responsibility and people are willing to do evil things for the sake of a few bucks because now it's just part of a game.

I agree -- when I wrote this story ten years ago, it felt contemporary, but not it's somehow even more so -- there's a desperation for closeness that people have never really felt before coupled with a new generation pushing the limites of tech tolerance. And of course the abuse of power via Facebook and the like is baked into the narrative.
