DescriptionWelcome back to Shemp's Art gallery. No theme this month. I will continue with Birthdays for the next two weeks and then we will see what happens next. Let's continue with artist November birthdays.Don Newton, born November 6 1934. Don is well known for his art on Batman, Aquaman and Captain Marvel and on Charlton's The Phantom. Before becoming a professional artist, Don was a prolific contributor to comic fanzines. Between 1968 and 1973 he worked for most of the major fanzines. Newton’s work appeared in over one hundred fanzines. Don was also a prolific painter. I am lucky to have 6 or 7 of Don's paintings. All vary in sizes, all are breathtaking! He is one of my favorite artist. Most of the artwork I have is from his fanzine days. I love his Batman and Aquaman work, but it's his early work that I'm drawn to. There's something raw and powerful about it. Here we have a Tom Tyler Captain Marvel painting by Don Newton. Having studied under Captain Marvel co-creator C. C. Beck, Don was a big fan of Captain Marvel. He often dressed as Captain Marvel at conventions and collected Captain Marvel memorabilia. He would actually trade his paintings for memorabilia that he wanted. This painting is big. 24 x 18 framed to 30x24. The colors are vibrant, the likeness is spot on. It's simply beautiful. The yellow is amazingly done to show the fabric of the spun gold. For this size, the effect would emblazon into your retinas like staring at an eclipse!

I have to admit that I wasn't aware of Newton's painted work, so seeing this other side of Don's talent is a wonderful surprise to me. This is a really nice piece!

A nice example of the talent he would go on to become later on. But quick, get me my sunglasses!
