Description

Jump, Jive, an’ Wail!

Hepcats in 1955 (and 2021 for that matter) would immediately recognize the appearance of jazz baritone saxophonist, composer, and bandleader Gerry Mulligan (as Hi on tenor saxophone), jazz trumpeter, singer, and composer Louis Prima (as Fi), and singer Keely Smith (as Lenore Lillis) in the band assisting in the robbery of Ma Casino’s high rollers. Thanks to Thomas Ward for this wonderful strip.

In the mid-1950s, Louis Prima and Keely Smith had the hottest musical act in Las Vegas and put out a series of popular records. Gerry Mulligan had gained popularity for his “cool school” of jazz recordings, including a number with trumpeter Chet Baker in a pianoless quartet.

Fun and gorgeous daily! Love the colorful characters and lovely ladies here. Good catch re the musicians --- I might have recognized Mulligan, but not the others
