DescriptionFinally! I've wanted an Infinity Gauntlet page by George featuring The Dr. Doom. Never thought I would get one, but finally got it on Comic Link this past month! AND getting it with Dr. Strange and Silver Surfer, makes it even SWEETER! Look at the "Kirby-Crackle" coming from Dr. Doom's hands! Really, really lucky! This is a terrific George Perez page from Infinity Gauntlet #2 (1991), featuring three of Marvel's greatest characters, Doctor Strange, Doctor Doom and the Silver Surfer. On the page preceding this one the Surfer awoke to find himself in the presence of Doom and Strange. The master of the mystic arts is being held prisoner by Doom's Doombots. The Surfer attacks Doom who quickly takes him down and threatens to steal his power cosmic like he did back in the classic Lee/Kirby era. With both Strange and the Surfer under his control, Doom wants Strange to explain to him about the half of the universe's population that took a powder when Thanos snapped his fingers in the first issue of the series. Before Strange can explain, they are interrupted by a new presence. The page ends with Doom asking, "Intruder, who are you?". This was the set up for the big full page reveal of Adam Warlock, the cult cosmic hero who hadn't been seen in a comic book story for 14 years since he apparently "died" at the hand of Thanos and was living inside the Soul Gem ever since. Warlock was the true hero of Infinity Gauntlet, an opportunity for writer Jim Starlin to capture the magic of the 1970s again. Social/Sharing |

That last panel with Doom's cowl creating an artificial panel break is a Perez flair that is him being creative going off script!

We don't get to see Doom surprised too often. He's the batman of the Marvel Universe. Always a contingency. But not here!
