Maryam Gohar - Iranian Figure Artist - Watercolor & Acrylic - NWS

Maryam Gohar is a female artist living in Iran. The name she uses for this body of work is a pseudonym, as it would not be well-received in her country. I ran across Maryam's work on Facebook and was smitten with her color use and layering of imagery. She works with Japanese prints in her work quite a bit, transferring and painting select portions of the work to intertwine with her figures. This piece is titled Red Flag and features major elements of a Japanese print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861) painted into the piece. The Battle of Genji and Heike at the Fuji River was a circa 1844 triptych woodblock print, with the portion of this piece derived from the third print in the triptych. I'll post the source print in the additional images, though in the triptych the only version I could find was backwards. In person, the colors are vibrant and lush, along with Maryam's wonderful figure work.
