I commissioned Mark McKenna to do a bust inked sketch for me of Wally West Flash. I explained to him how Wally on the show is the comic relief, and very lovable. I wanted him smiling in the sketch. When he gave the sketchbook back to me, it was the only sketch I received that I didn't like. I didn't know why at first. I just knew I didn't like it. My thought was that he took the time to color the yellow portions of his costume in with marker. So when I saw the sketch and I saw the yellow, I thought of the reverse Flash.

I was disappointed and showed it to a good friend of mine who suggested maybe getting the rest of the sketch colored in may help. I met Nick Justus at a different con about a year later. Nick took one look at it and said "He didn't erase the under-drawing". I think that's what was bugging me about it but didn't realize it. So when McKenna first drew it, he sketched a rough outline in pencil before he completed the sketch in ink. There were numerous pencil lines around the sketch which to me diminished the image.

Nick asked if he could erase the under-drawing before he colored it. I enthusiastically agreed, and thanked him. When I got the final piece back, it went from being my least favorite sketch to one of my favorites. The colors made the piece pop, and erasing the under-drawing cleared up the muddiness around the image. $50 for McKenna for the inked bust shot in 2020, and $20 for the coloring by Justus in 2021.
