I wonder what format these were printed in. Comic book or newspaper strip? Hard to pick a favorite unless you go eeny, meeny, miny, moe.

Very good question! In Spain they were printed as comics, not as newspaper strips. Manuel Gago was a bestseller in Spain, especially with his most famous character El Guerrero del Antifaz. Later El Guerrero del Antifaz and others would be reissued in vertical format following the influence of American superhero comics (Marvel and DC).
