Description
Batman (Vol. 1) #204 Cover Original Art (August 1968). This story, "Operation: Blindfold!", features the first appearance of Schemer as he utilizes a façade of men appearing to be blind to pull off heists, in turn attempting to frame the Dynamic Duo for murder in the process. The cover features a horde of Schemer's henchmen, all wielding canes and placards proclaiming they are blind, as they descend upon and surround Batman. The cover was penciled and inked by Irv Novick and does a great job creating a suspenseful scene as Batman appears to be at impossible odds, an all too familiar feeling. An interesting trivia piece about this cover is that DC Art Director at the time, Carmine Infantino, a Batman art legend in his own right, was not happy with the way Batman looked in the original cover. As a result, he redrew Batman and patched the cover with an original art paste up. I have no idea what the original looked like since it is permanently underneath the paste up (maybe there is a prelim floating around I can find some day), but I love Infantino's take on the Dark Knight and think it fits the scene perfectly. Simply a stunning example of a Batman Silver Age cover! Art is done in ink over graphite on standard 11" X 17" board. The "Operation: Blindfold!" title is an original hand lettered paste up (not a photocopy), while the remaining stats are typical photocopies (but original as far as I can tell).

As of this posting, this is the oldest US Bat cover I have in my collection (I do have 2 Brazilian covers from the 50's), so super happy to be able to add something from the 60's into my Bat cover gallery!

Man, I love this cover and am happy to tell you that this was a massive bargain compared to everything else sold in the same auction. Really great art and undervalued. Congrats on getting your first Silver Age cover!

Classic era of Batman still glowing from the TV series.  They knew how to create a full tensioned fill cover!  Batman has to be careful fighting with this group unless he can claim to be blind as a bat.

I am continually amazed at how many figures/faces/arms.etc, are redrawn and pasted over the original on covers.  You could make a career out of inking in the extra bits on the paste-up outside the figure/face/arm.etc to complete the background!

I, too, would love to see the original Ir Novick figure!  Great cover.
