Spidey 37 cover recreation (Photonik) by Jean-Yves Mitton

I suppose because I live in Québec, I used to see some issues of this title and other French/Belgian reprints of American superheroes in comic shops from time to time. I don't know if it was because they received some distribution here or if it was simply that people brought them back after travelling to Europe, but I always enjoyed seeing them.

It was always interesting to see how superheroes were handled, artistically speaking, by artists overseas. I've always felt that Jean-Yves Mitton's work had a very late 70's/early 80's Marvel approach, which of course was what I loved most back when I first got into comics in the early 80's. This is not only a well done recreation, but as you mention, Mitton clearly still has all his abilities even at 77 years of age. Félicitations!

Looks just like it did pubished.  The long forearms are a great exaggeration to show the expressive hands! 

Yeah, he hasn't lost "it." That's a very cool cover recreation. I like that watercolor, too. That's a tight edge for that kind of work. I wasn't aware of the artist, but I can see the comparison to JB. Especially in the busts on the original cover. Also, something about the color job, gives it a little bit of a Ditko look, too. I don't know why, just something about it in the face on the main character. Very cool that you could snag one. Congrats!

This is a really cool piece, F M.  A rarely available original piece by an artist who made a significant contribution to an important series from your youth?  Yeah - winning.  I can absolutely understand your frustration about the site crashing (twice!) when securing your spot in line for choosing a recreation, but (speaking as one on the "outside"), I think your choice was a really good one.  The recreation certainly looks to include lots more watercolor / wash / tone detail on the body, and J H is right about the impressive edge on the watercolors amidst the shards of glass.  It certainly looks to be much more finished than the original!  A really strong piece that speaks to Mr. Mitton still being in accomplished command of the toolbox!  Good on him, and congrats to you for scoring this fine piece from an important artist from your youth - congrats!
