Description

This is a 13 1/4" x 18 1/4" pencil and ink drawing by Stephen "Flame" Taylor. It depicts the fury mutated Hank McCoy Beast perched on top of an angel statue on a building. Beast is lit up by a spotlight indicating that someone is pursuing him. There is an image of his non-fury self in his X-Men uniform looking on at the current event with a surprised or shocked look on his face.

One thing I really like about this piece are the notes at the bottom and back. They are written in blue pencil and are in ALL CAPS. Does this indicate that the writer has lettered comics in the past? The notes at the bottom of the page state, "If this is night time shot, make it look like one! Steve: we suggest you zip-a-tone sky or totally blacken sky to give greater emphasis to spot-light. We have roughly drawn a circle which we believe corrisponds to your flood light. This effect is not present as drawing stands. Eye wanders and sees nothing. Get rid of building. It will help. Over" Notes on the back, "Possibly original Beast's left hand should be removed as it clutters up around the action area." It appears that the artist followed the suggestions in the notes.

I know very little about the artist and I have no idea what this drawing was for. Given the notes, it may be an art school project or it may have been a submission for publication and the editors gave feedback about what to fix before it would be published. From my research so far, Stephen "Flame" Taylor has a drawing published in Comics Journal #43 (December 1978), #44 (January 1979), and 47 (July 1979). He also has a published cover for Buyer's Guide for Comic Fandom #238 (June 9, 1978) and #242 (July 7, 1978). Was this a submission for one of these publications?
