Description
Ink wash, white watercolor, and pencil on gray board. This illustration accompanied a story in the British women's magazine Britannia and Eve #128, December 1939. The man of the house and his priestly guest appear to be having some sort of battle of the wills during mealtime prayer. Artist Fortunino Matania kept a massive collection of vintage furniture to use as reference material.

Carlo Goldini (1707-1793) was an Italian comedic playwright and some of his themes were the hypocracy of monks and clergy of the church.  This is a comedic take where the man and the monk keep an eye on each other.  The monk looking back seems to indicate he may not be as pious as he appears.
