Description

Thrilled to finally add a piece from another of my favorite series: Fables. A beautifully depicted moment with “the boys”: Flycatcher, Pinocchio, and Boy Blue, all reading comics together on the steps of City Hall. In the wake of the events of the war against The Adversary, the wound Blue acquired whilst protecting Bigby seems somehow unable to fully heal… and indeed appears to be spreading. Dark and very powerful magics seem to be in play.

The warmth, charm, and almost dreamlike quality of Mark Buckingham’s pencils always made it feel like you were reading a modern fairy tale whenever you cracked open an issue of ‘Fables’. His talents were put to excellent use not only to make all the immortal Fables more relatable and “human”, but to (dramatically) make the horrific parts stand out that much more; you knew they were coming, but at the same time didn’t expect them because of how beautiful all the surroundings were.

These three characters and their dynamic together - Fly, Blue, and Pinnochio - always grounded the series and provided its warmth and humanity. Each panel is a great display of their camaraderie, but I find panel three especially sublime, with Fly and Pinnochio’s concern and affection for their wounded friend on full display. The dash of faux zipatone (zipafaux-ne?) in panels one and two add a really subtle sense of shading and dimension to the proceedings. So delighted the series is back!

Reading comics on the steps? Every collector needs a page of art featuring the main characters reading comics! I read Fables for a few years and then eventually lost interest. But I think it had more to do withthe fact that it got too unwieldy with the sheer amount of characters to keep track of, because while I stopped reading the title, I did keep reading Jack of Fables and enjoyed it much more. So with that spin-off title featuring far fewer characters, that's what led me to conclude it was the overabundance of characters to keep track of that soured me on the main title. Anyway, I still bought several trades I never got around to reading, so perhaps I'll make an attempt to start from scratch some day. Super fun page, Jason, I love it!

Poignant, pensive work. Arcs like Fables remind us that the power of good storytelling, drawn from age-old tradition, is eternal.
