DescriptionThis is the third page from the complete book I own.A quiet page of Flash/Wally preparing to go on holiday. But what a page. The first horizontal panel perfectly sets the background of the scene and yet Lightle used some negative space and sparse inking to delineate it all. To great effect as it really conveys a nearly vaporous sense of being “somewhere else”. It almost feels like a panel from a Franco-Belgian book. Then the busy second panel is perfect in conveying that slightly anxious sense of a crowd of people not knowing each other but embarking on the same journey, (you know those? Think a bunch of excited school kids waiting with their parents for the school bus to arrive to take them to a nature class). Lightle reverted to a more realistic approach to depict the characters here than he did on the previous page. The inking is top notch as well, especially on the clothes I find with that smeared finish at the end of a more solid line. A strong change of camera angle (to keep things interesting) in panel 3 help us get a good view of the vehicle hardly seen in panel 1 despite some text heavy word balloons. Then a nice view of Wally in panel 4 with a more animated look (with a Buzz Lightyear jaw & chin). I love how he is holding the broken snow goggles that are then used as a fifth panel to bridge it to the last one. Again, top notch inking here. I love the native and the yack reflecting in the goggles. Said characters who are used to bid a farewell to Wally as he leaves on his journey in the last panel. Tons of great artistic and storytelling details resulting in a truly nice (if quiet) page from a master. Social/Sharing |

Very experimental here, wasn't he? Where do you keep finding such wonderful art?

Every piece of art that came from Lightle's hands was a gift to us fans. To actually own a page of his work is a great joy.

Every panel looks like it could have been drawn by a different artist. Nice range of choices on this page.

On a page that should be crowded considering the number of characters, Lightle manages to give everyone a distinct look and carefully balances everything with effective use of contrast. I'm more familiar with his cover work but MAN did he have storytelling chops too. Great page!

Really beautiful scene-setting page, F M. I can't stop staring at that second panel, which should feel crowded (like Eranga says), but doesn't at all, thanks to a great layout which incorporates the word balloons to "top off" the composition. The inking is superb throughout, but that second panel is awesome, and feels so perfectly balanced. I like how he sneaks the "two extra" panels in with the use of the goggles (and how the hole in one lens corresponds to Wally's POV). A workshop in how to set the stage in a sequential narrative. And you have the whole issue? Right on!! Congrats, F M!

That line weight just gives the page such a great look. It's so clean and even, it's almost like it was one continuous line. And I love the choices of sparse or dark inks, depending on the impact or light of the scene. Simple but very nicely done page. I didn't appreciate Lightle enough. Very nice page. Congrats!

Fantastic page from one of the most underrated artists out there. Steve Lightle was a fabulous artist and I'm pleased to own a number of his pieces.
