Description

In 1966, Lancer Books published Conan the Adventurer by Robert E. Howard and L. Sprague De Camp. Frank Frazetta’s cover image was so strong that it seemed to define the book’s hero. In an interview with Arnie Fenner, Frazetta said, “He was what I thought a barbarian should look like, the ultimate barbarian. Howard’s description was quite different. He was leaner with shorter hair and hawkish features. I instead saw a scarred, a real monster sort of a guy. That’s just the way I felt a guy should look like at this point.”

It became a classic image of the famous character. As Frazetta exclaimed in that same interview, “Everybody has copied my Conan ever since.”

With the cover to Powers #32, Michael Avon Oeming made a conscious homage to Frazetta's work. It's my favorite cover from the series. 11” x 17” on comic art board.

Very nice tribute to the master and that painting!  Oeming's visual style remains intact and dazzles in this fantasy genre.

A true homage. Even though it is based on a Frazetta it is pure Oeming. Congrats.
