Description
Though not Byrne's first encounter with the X-Men—he had previously illustrated them for a few pages in Marvel Team-Up #53—this marked his first full story featuring the team. Like the main X-Men series, this issue was also penned by Chris Claremont.

A true visual delight, the page showcases Colossus, Nightcrawler (with Kurt being a particular favorite), and Wolverine all using their powers in unison. What more could one ask for?

A fascinating detail for devoted X-Men enthusiasts: if you look closely at the underpenciling in panel 5, you’ll notice Byrne initially sketched Wolverine wearing his traditional mask instead of the short-lived "Fang of the Imperial Guard" costume. Byrne himself noted on his website, "One of [Dave Cockrum’s] last official acts as penciler of Uncanny X-Men was to redesign Wolverine’s costume. The new suit was introduced just before I joined."

According to Byrne, Cockrum was tasked with redrawing Wolverine's new costume throughout this Iron Fist issue, as well as modifying some of the X-Men's faces. Thanks to a quirk in the publication schedule, this September 1977 issue became the debut of Wolverine’s "Fang" costume, appearing a month before X-Men #107 where Cockrum formally introduced it.

Also worth noting, while panel 5 doesn’t mark the first appearance of the famous "fastball special" maneuver, it is the first time Byrne illustrated it.

Panel 5 bears Byrne’s signature, and the back of the page offers an unexpected bonus: a pencil sketch by Byrne of Mary Jane Watson dressed as Red Sonja, an early concept that would eventually materialize in Marvel Team-Up #79 a year and a half later.

In my humble opinion, this is the most iconic and celebrated page of the entire run!

Such a special page, with so many treats.  Early Byrne X-men, a fastball special, the fang costume, AND a bonus sketch on the back.  Congratulations my friend.  Such a fun treasure!

I think this might be my favorite page of his Iron Fist run...and ironically it doesn't even have Iron Fist on it.

That is an amazing bonus - almost a shame to have such a great bonus on such a great page - which to display?  Congrats!

Gotta love the faith that the X-Men have in each other here, with Nightcrawler worried that Wolverine will kill a mailman or Jean's parents. Classic stuff!
