Description

Prince Valiant by John Cullen Murphy. "Prince Valiant in the Days of King Arthur" was created by Hal Foster in 1937. He handled the art until 1971, and after a number of different artists tried out for the role, Foster handed the artistic reigns to Murphy. Murphy worked from Foster's scripts and handled the art chores until 2004, when he handed the baton to Gary Gianni.

Prior to this role, Murphy was best known as the artist on Big Ben Bolt (1950 -1978). His son, Cullen Murphy, handled scripting for over 20 years starting shortly before Foster's death and wrote an excellent book "Cartoon County" which talks about growing up in a community in Connecticut with a amazingly large number of comic strip artists. It's really an interesting read.

The Murphy estate recently let go a lot of the artwork and the Foster prelims. These pieces are large, bigger than 2x up art, and I liked the large image of this example. The layout, by Foster, is careful not to show the actual violence, but is clear that the chain engineer was murdered by a traitor, setting up next week's episode "The Taste of Defeat."

Engages the audience as witnesses to this act of sabotage and what it will lead to now that the enemy can breach their defenses. Presented with the great tradition of the Prince Valiant name that is the mark of adventure strip illustration excellence throughout all of comics during this time period. Certainly a standout amongst all other strips in the run with a powerful final act shown in large scale to represent the massive consequences.
