DescriptionDenys Wortman (1887-1958) was the brilliant creator of Metropolitan Movies, which sometimes ran as Everyday Movies in some papers. Wortman comes right out of the Ashcan School of art, and you can see that influence in this wonderful WWII-era panel from February 29 (Leap Year), 1944. Two of Wortman’s office girls are chatting, with one saying, “I wish the government would postpone leap year until the boys all come home.” She’s referring to the fact that the boys are all away fighting overseas, and leap year means they’ll be gone an extra day. Wortman’s figure work is spot-on and he captures the body language of the women beautifully. The piece was affixed to a mat by Wortman, who wrote the caption and date on the mat itself. The full piece measures 16¾”x 14” and is in Very Good condition, taking the mat into consideration. Wortman’s work does not show up for sale all that often and this is a terrific example. $250.00 + 17.00 Priority shipping.Social/Sharing |
