Description

Mark Schultz 'Battle Maiden Attack' 2022, graphite on paper, approx. 9" x 12" image area. Our first preference in a piece from MS is an inked one, but that's not to say that we don't love his pencil drawings as well. For awhile, I had it stuck in my head that the pencil versions weren't the 'finished' art, if there was going to be an ink final, an inaccurate notion I was eventually able to get rid of and appreciate the graphite artwork purely as an entity unto itself.
We've passed on a couple of choices in the past that we have some regrets about, so now seemed like a good time to correct that oversight. At the time of writing this on June 2, 2022 the piece is unpublished, 'though according to MS, it will appear in Carbon 5.

Looks well balanced with Schultz's composition with shapes and movement direction! The pencil line is strong and lively to frame the shading that looks incredibly finished. Doing this in another medium will lose some of the nuance he put into this piece.

I prefer inked pieces, because they are by definition finished. But you don't get more finished than this. Congrats.
