DescriptionAnother longwinded explanation: EC planned three "Three Dimensional EC Classics" 3D comic books back in 1954. They published only two of them, the first issue which had a mix of all types of EC stories from Mad, Frontline Combat, Crime Suspenstories, and Weird Science, The second, "Three Dimensional Tales From The Crypt Of Terror" were all horror stories, a genre which had been ignored in the first issue. The last of them, very likely to be called "Three Dimensional Weird Science-Fantasy", was not published due to poor sales figures from the other two. You can read all about these in every last detail here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Dimensional_E.C._Classics ............................................................................HERE'S THE IMPORTANT THING: Though all 12 stories [4 per book] re-used story scripts already published in the regular color books, the art itself was completely NEW, most often from a different artist than had done it previousy. ........All the stories for the third book had already been done, including the Wallace Wood version of 'Spawn Of Venus' (which had previously been drawn by Al Feldstein for the color comic book). All the stories prepared for the third book had six layers of depth, meaning the artist had to do a finished pencil and inked page on board, and add five layers of registrated actetates with additional depth details on tape hinges on top of the board art. It further meant - at least in Wood's case - that a stand-alone pencil prelim had to be done to make red pen notations of which part of each panel would be assigned to which acetate layer. What remains today are a set of 8 pages of pencil prelims, and, separately, the original art, with its overlays, that was to be published in 1954, and finally saw the first light of day in its 2D version in Wood's prozine Witzend #6, 1969. (The compete story, scanned from the original pen & ink board art base layer, was included in the 2012 IDW Artist's Edition: Wally Wood EC Stories); image area 13x18"Social/Sharing |
