In 1959, �Mad� creator Harvey Kurtzman produced the first book-length work of original comics, the adult-oriented, satirical �Jungle Book.� Published by Ballantine Books, it�s considered by many to be Kurtzman�s most acclaimed solo work.This page comes from the story �Compulsion on the Range�, a satire that blends Westerns and Freudian pop psychology. In �Compulsion,� a psychologist tries to work out why Marshall Matt Dolin (a parody of James Arness as Marshal Matt Dillon from the popular �Gunsmoke� TV show/1955-1975) insists on trying to outshoot Johnny Ringding, chasing him across the West.

A prime period of Kurtzman's career showing off the cartooning talent that went beyond comics and pushed into the mainstream.
