DescriptionIn 1972, ABC aired “The Night Stalker” which was the highest rated original television movie of all time! (Part 1 of 2) “The Night Stalker” film is the story of investigative reporter, Carl Kolchak, who suspects that a series of killings in the Las Vegas area are really the work of a vampire! However, the authorities, and Kolchak’s boss, believe the murders to be the work of a deranged serial killer. Because of its initial success, in 1973, a sequel called “The Night Strangler” aired, again, on ABC. “The Night Strangler” tells the story of an immortal killer who strangles victims every 21 years and then uses their blood to make an elixir which allows him to live forever. It is at this point that I must defer to my friend Vinnie, who I believe to be more of an expert on this topic and all things related to Carl Kolchak. With Vinnie and Carl in mind, about 3 years ago I did my first “parody” cover. I’ve always liked combining different characters and doing strange crossovers, but with this piece, I also “paid tribute,” i.e. copied, one of my favorite covers, Marvel Team-Up #3 (1972) which featured one of my favorite, misunderstood villains, Morbius the Living Vampire. In addition, I also wanted to pay tribute to cover artist Gil Kane, who was one of my idols. Further, I loved the idea of Spider-Man and Carl teaming up to solve the mystery of several unexplained murders on the local college campus and discovering that they were really the work of a vampire! Hmmm…that plot sounds familiar! Anyways, I did the piece as a completed pencil drawing. At the time, I did not know how to “ink” my work. I gave it to Vinnie as a gift, because as my friend Dino often says, we should try to “put a little good back into the world whenever we can.” Thus, three years later I have “updated” this piece, now in “ink” and with better head likenesses, corrected composition, and added text. Finally, I abbreviated the Independent News Service, or I.N.S., which is the newspaper wire service Kolchak worked for. Tomorrow, I will post Part 2. Enjoy!Social/Sharing |
