DescriptionBack when I was 17 I did a 7-pg sword & sorcery story and submitted it to CREEPY magazine -- I was too poor to include return postage, so when it was rejected they never returned it to me... this is the ONLY picture of those pages... back in 1968 the xerox machines were garbage, so there was no way to scan or copy those pages... SO THIS STORY HAS BEEN LOST FOR THE PAST 54 YEARS!!Social/Sharing |

Yikes. What a sad story.
Obviously can't see any detail, but looks like you really went to town on the art. At the very least, you'd think they would send a card encouraging you to keep practising. Can't imagine much unsolicited art was near this standard.

At the time I think I had the idea that because CREEPY printed one of my drawings on their Fan Club Page in issue #12 in 1966 (two years earlier), I thought it might be a "sure thing" they'd accept the story -- but I was just a 17-yr old idiot! And I paid the price.... yeah, I wish I had some better images of that story.... oh well.... it's long gone....

Well, a TALENTED "17-year-old idiot" from what I can make out. If it's not too personal, did you pursue a creative career?
By the way, I was born on December of '67, so a matter of months before this photo was taken.

I've partially told my story in the posts I've done in my CAF Galleries -- I'm currently 72, and started collecting comics and began drawing/copying my favorite artists when I was 13-15 -- after doing lots of art for the early fanzines and working in Bud Plant's comic shops, in 1976 I tried to get into the comics field professionally by going to New York and working for one month in Neal Adams studio... but it didn't work out, I returned to California and spent then-on freelancing various comic art jobs over the decades! Some were extremely interesting, like doing cartoons for Carl Sagan's newsletter, and years of work for various religious publications.

As a 17 year old but a writer I sold a story to Creepy in 1968 (yes they were prett yahrd up back then) I got it back i na trade deal in 1985 when Warren sold off a lot of the art he had to make some needed cash - I got it for 4 men's adventure mags to give yo ua sense of it s value at that time - the artist was Tony Tallarico- so your art may still exist somewhere! It's fun seeing your earl ywork as I rememebr yo ufro mthe fanzines and the underground
