Description

It's not hard to imagine that Hal Foster was already noodling around the idea of a Viking-themed strip at this time in 1935. It is known that while he was working on Tarzan, he began the concept of a stand-alone strip tentatively titled "Derek, Son of Thane" (the name changed to "Prince Arn", and eventually to Prince Valiant before it saw print). Foster had started the Tarzan strip in 1928 and would continue to illustrate it until 1937, just a few months after his Prince Valiant strip would debut.
