Description

What can be cooler than an oversized (11" X 17") painting of the one and only Fin Fang Foom! This was published in a 1995 collection featuring portraits of various Marvel characters. Along with the slightly more famous Groot, Fin is one of the most famous 'Kirby Monsters', a nickname for the creatures who appeared in short stories in the 'Pre-Hero' era of Marvel's publishing history. The monster stories were popular with kids who loved movies like Godzilla. Starting in the late 1950s and continuing into the early 1960s Jack Kirby's monster stories, usually written by Stan Lee or his brother Larry Lieber, appeared as the first story and usually the cover feature for titles like Tales of Suspense, Strange Tales, Tales to Astonish, Journey Into Mystery and Amazing Adventures. Fin Fang Foom first appeared in a short story in Strange Tales #89 in October of 1961, which was just one month before Fantastic Four #1 kicked off the Marvel Age of Comics.

In his first appearance, Fin Fang Foom is an alien dragon who destroys a communist Chinese invasion force of Taiwan, a story that is still relevant today over 60 years later. Most of the Kirby Monsters only appeared once or twice. Fin Fang Foom on the other hand returned in 1974 in the pages of Astonishing Tales and he would later go on to become an on-going villain in the Iron Man series.

Some things never die! This painting by Nelson captures all the childhood fascination with these mythical dragons still lives to this day. The way he handles the mainly green and brown painting by adding yellow, blues, and purples compliment each other to bring the most classy representation of Fin Fang Foom to date. It shows how enduring a character and concept he is in Marvel.
