DescriptionThis is a physical cover used as a "chase variant" cover for an NFT reprint of Avengers Annual #10. It came in two versions: the rare "hero version" in mostly black and white, and the ultra-rare "vibranium version" in full color; see additional images. It depicts Rogue's victory over both Captain America and Thor in her sensational debut in Avengers Annual #10 (1981). Creees' depiction reflects Paul Smith's ingenue rendering, as opposed to the erroneously middle-aged look Rogue had in her first few appearances, or the buxom bombshell she became under Jim Lee's pencil. You may recall that Michael Golden, the interior artist for that issue, proposed a terrific cover showing Rogue surrounded by a pile of defeated Avengers. For some reason it was scrapped for a far less memorable Al Milgrom cover with numerous small panels touting aspects of the story. Creees Lee's rendition is closer to the spirit of Golden's work Creees could have left the ground empty; instead, he lovingly textured it. But let's take a moment to talk about, yes, Rogue's boots. They stand out as an unusual design element of Lee's version of the costume. In the original Annual interiors, inker Armando Gil depicted the boots as flat against Rogue's tights, or perhaps even integrated into them. This was generally followed by Walt Simonson and Paul Smith. However, close study of Golden's rejected cover shows that he intended the boots to stand away from the calf in their zig-zag pattern. John Romita Jr treated the white boot top as a simple band with no zig-zag. Creees has followed Golden's lead, making the boot top contour even more clear and memorable than I've seen it before. Small detail, but distinctive footwear is a good thing. Social/Sharing |

Creees really has great workmanship combined with his unique imagination on this cover! The different influences for the early evil look is really cool.
