The show premiered in Spetember of 1986. The comic began in 1988 and ran for four years. The comic loosely followed the continuity of the show. So maybe the date in the margin was tying it back to the sequence in relation to the air date of the epsodes?

Great, fun cover. I've seen that date on the margin of a lot of art. It is printed on the stock paper and has nothing to do with the comic.

FYI, If you look at the Iron Man #231 cover on CAF you see the same date on that paper stock as well.

Great showcase full figure in full view Alf! He's addressing the audience and us. The date on the side is the date Marvel ordered the cover blank paper. They bought enough to last three to four years at a time.
