DescriptionThis is it. My friends know this is a big one for me. After a disastrous FACTS edition in 2015 (for me – the show’s great. See my Rorschach post), I finally got to meet superstar artist Lee Bermejo again & get another shot at a commission from one of my favourite people in the business at Dutch Comic Con 2022 yesterday. He was the sole reason we woke up at 5 am & we made the drive over to the Netherlands. Our group & other friends who went there separately, were the 5 first people in line. Despite some lining shenanigans and when we broke off from the rest of the group who went VIP, my fiancée and I were the two very first attendees waiting at the doors. I have some crazy pictures of A LOT of people standing right behind me. Alright, 10 am & the doors open. Time to rush to Artist Alley and meet up with our friends, who were in line at Lee’s table. Luckily, I was still 4th in line – after my buddies. I’m very grateful that a friend let me go in front of him (as his piece would be picked up the day after), so mine could get done on Saturday as the second one to be done. My request was no longer a Rorschach, as the older I get, the less I gel with that character. It was going to be a Batman in the rain. I was on the list (but that had happened in 2015, as well, and did not work out) & that was the best to hope for at that moment. He would only do 3 commissions (of only this scale) a day. I decided to start my tour of the artist alley. Considering the lines at Lee’s table throughout the entire day & his panel at 12 am (with a great highlight being Lee calling himself a “lazy realist”), I was a tiny bit worried. Luckily, around 3 pm, Lee blocked some time for commissions and started working on mine. The mastery at display with this level of commission by Lee is astonishing. I missed a big chunk of the later finishing, but saw the start of it come to life in pencils & inks, and then got a small rundown from a great friend. For instance, Lee held up the page at specific angles into the light, to check how it was coming along, how he did multiple layers of his amazing ink wash work, and how he used this piece as a reference for some doodles. At 5 pm, it was practically done – yet when I went to pick it up, he started adding some more rain lines on the mask & some white-outs spots here and there. It’s astonishing how well defined & layered this commission feels and looks. It’s cliché, but the scan does not do it justice. I know this is a pose that Lee has done once or twice throughout the years, with some minor variations, but the storytelling behind it just resonates so much with my understanding & love of Batman. A contemplating mess of a man – or child – driven by a haunting & tormenting vow he made so many years ago. The added quote just adds that extra “oomph ” to drive the message home. The size is 11x14 – bigger than what I anticipated, as I expected him to work on 9x12. Techniques used were pencils, inks, layered ink wash & some white-out here and there. The size was pleasant surprise, which helped with the price. Lee’s not cheap & is extremely rare to get, as he tends to work slowly, his lines get swamped, and he doesn’t even always do commissions at shows. In short, I’m very grateful for this one finally happening. To conclude, some other highlights perhaps: Lee remembering my fan letter that I wrote a few years ago and that I brought to the show to hand him personally (to add of our email conversation). Or when he applauded my choice of books for him to sign, especially the rare French versions (black & white Damned limited print HC, and his original art book that DC repurposed a few years ago). They did almost break my back, though. Or being present when the two most amazing “Batman: Damned” cosplayers showed up. It was as if they walked straight out of the book, and Lee was gushing so much. It was great seeing him look at all the details of that amazing cosplay. I helped them out with some pictures & some selfies are on his Instagram. It’s funny that after 7 years of chasing this, it’s finally happened. I’ll sleep well this week. Social/Sharing |

Driving along Belgium roads with my lady
Con starts today, I line up in fourth
Within artist alley we're stoked to sign in
I feel a shiver run up my spine
I feel the warmth of Lee's hand on lines
Oh, it's Lee's Batman in the rain
Drawing it by hand as the one I love
Oh, then I left on Saturday
With the happy way I feel inside
