DescriptionThe main man by Val Semeiks.I thought I'd finish this week off with the title splash to Lobo #1 of the monthly series. Lobo had made a few guest appearances and was a regular character in the L.E.G.I.O.N. series. Lobo then exploded onto the scene in 1990 in a mini series written by Alan Grant and Keith Giffen with art by Simon Bisley. That miniseries led to many subsequent miniseries and specials. In 1993 Lobo was given his own monthly series written by Alan Grant with art by Val Semeiks and John Dell. I was already a fan of Val's from his work on The Demon, also written by Alan Grant. The art team of Semeiks and Dell was, I thought, the perfect pairing. Val's art was taken to a whole new level on Lobo with the addition of John Dell on inks. Add that to the writing of Alan Grant and you had yourself a hit. The book never took itself seriously and was great fun to read. I'll have to ask Val whose idea it was to put all the band names as graffiti. I see Mr. Bungle, Napalm Death, Metallica, Pantera, The Cramps, Skinny Puppy, Bad Brains, Megadeth, Ozzy Osbourne and Nirvana. Bummer...my favorite band, Anthrax is not there. Lobo #1 pg.1 "The Qigly Affair, Part One" written by Alan Grant with art by Val Semeiks and John Dell. Social/Sharing |

Kick-ass #1 pg.1 book opening scene!
Also good to see Metallica getting the font size credit they deserve ;)

I never latched onto Lobo or Bisley myself, but I can appreciate the mega popularity both had during the early 90's. But damn, bro, you've been hiding the very first title/credits splash from the very first issue of the ongoing series?! This is quite the coup for any Lobo fan, congrats!

I spy, with my little eye, the Rolling Stones tongue and lips logo (reversed)

That's important Lobo and ties him to the comics of that day when outsider characters conquered the comics landscape. Sets the tone of the series right off the bat! Semeiks artwork hold up very well and would even pass for being from today.

Striking splash that sets the tone for what the Main Man is all about.
