Description

Frank Cho was a guest at the inaugural Fan Expo San Francisco on Thanksgiving weekend. In the last couple years, I learned he was a Sherlock Holmes fan as he displayed artwork for a Baker Street Irregulars organization: Sherlock, Dr. John Watson, Mycroft Holmes, and Irene Adler. This year saw the prose book What Child is This? A Sherlock Holmes Christmas Adventure by Bonnie MacBird with his illustrations. On social media, the artist offered to sign and do a quick sketch in books that fans brought to Fan Expo San Francisco and Maui Comic Con. I had preordered the mystery from my local comic shop so I had it ready. I caught up to Frank at a quiet moment without anyone else waiting. We chatted about Holmes while he drew. the Baker Street publication is strictly limited to members so that dashed my hopes of finding a copy for myself. I remember finding copies of the Edgar Rice Burroughs fanzines with Frank’s illustrations some twenty years ago. Since Holmes is in the public domain, I hope Frank takes advantage of the opportunity. I’d love to see a portfolio.
