Description

Batman (Vol. 1) #677 Original Cover Painting (July 2008). This is the second issue in the R.I.P. storyline, which was written by Grant Morrison and illustrated by Tony S. Daniel. This run also was the first run on the mainline title that Alex Ross was given the reigns to the primary covers, with Tony S. Daniel doing the variant covers. This story arc focuses on Black Glove and his assembled Club of Villains and had several companion storylines in other titles (e.g. Heart of Hush in Detective Comics). The cover depicts Bruce Wayne embracing Jezebel Jet, a serious love interest and the daughter of a woman who was a victim of Black Glove. This loving embrace under a fiery sun is overlaid onto the recognizable Ross version of the Dark Knight, showcasing as a fracture in his head, demonstrating the vulnerability and betrayal throughout their relationship. The juxtaposition of a happy romantic and a troubled angry vigilante is symbolic of the constant struggle Bats deals with daily. The painting is striking in person, and it is easy to see why Alex Ross is so highly heralded not only as a painter, but for his ability to provide a more realistic take on the comic genre.

Accomplished in gouache on Bristol board with an image area of 12.25" X 18.5". Signed in the lower right by Alex.

Looks like the cover for a superhero version of a hardboiled crime novel. Gotham crime boss The Batman catches his lieutenant in a tryst with The Batman's own moll, Jezebel Jet. Now it's The Batman's turn for REVENGE!

Love that Bats is looking right at the viewer, thinkgin about this scene. And those super contrasting colors between the middle and Bats...Ross showing out no doubt! Congrats!
